Streaky Bay (SA) - Saturday 23 March 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: True

RACE 1 – KEVIN KARUTZ MEMORIAL/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE:

SIERRA LEONE (R. Faehr) was slow to begin and hung out throughout the race.

RACE 2 – ELDERS ROBCO/BLANCHE PORT FISHERIES/WEST COAST FUNERALS CLASS D HANDICAP:

COOEE MISS (M. Neilson) stood flat-footed as the gates opened, missed the jump badly and was tailed off throughout the race.

Upon jumping DESERT SHADE (R. Faehr) shifted out onto PEARL’S IMAGE (K. Louca).

RACE 3 – ORTMANN & WHITFORD/CEDUNA BULK/MOGAS CLASS 4 HANDICAP:

H. McKechnie, rider of LUCKY RIPPER, reported her mount pulled up sore. A Veterinary examination of the mare revealed that it had a laceration to the near hind leg.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres MAGIC PROPSECT (R. Faehr) rolled in onto MUSGITAL (K. Louca), slightly hampering that filly momentarily.

Correct Weight was delayed to allow A. Stead, rider of the 2nd Placegetter SPRING DANCE, to view the photo for first. After doing so Correct Weight was duly declared.

RACE 4 – STREAKY BAY COMMUNITY HOTEL/CUB STREAKY BAY CUP:

Correct Weight was delayed to allow Mr. T. Trenowden, Trainer of the 2nd Placegetter POUND SHILLING, to view the photo for first. After doing so Correct Weight was duly declared.

Stewards questioned S. Grivell, rider of FRONT BEACH, regarding his riding of the gelding over the final 600 metres. S. Grivell stated that he had commenced to ride FRONT BEACH vigorously with the whip at this stage and the gelding had not responded. After entering the straight, despite still being ridden vigorously, FRONT BEACH had not responded to his efforts. He further stated, over the concluding 50 metres he had elected not to ride the gelding to the line as he believed FRONT BEACH could not improve its position further. Stewards noted S. Grivell’s explanation, but advised him of his obligations in riding his mount out over the concluding stages of a race.

RACE 5 – STREAKY BAY MEAT/FOX PETROLEUM/FREEWEST QUARRY CLASS 2 HANDICAP:

No report.

SWABBING:

Race 4 UNSUB (winner)
