Victoria Park (SA) - Saturday 2 March 2002

Track: Good
Weather: Overcast & Fine
Rail: True

RACE 1 – GARVAN FINANCIAL PLANNING HURDLE

Shortly after passing the winning post on the first occasion WINSOME WILLY (J. Wallace), which was inclined to lay in, brushed the running rail and became unbalanced.

MASCAGNI (C. Durden) struck the hurdle in the vicinity of the 1200 metres and became unbalanced for a short distance.

Making the turn out of the back straight BALLATA (P. Kelly) shifted out and hampered WINSOME WILLY (J. Wallace).

Subsequent to the race MASCAGNI was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported that gelding to be lame in the near foreleg.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of BALLATA revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2 – CLIPSAL HANDICAP

On jumping away CHEVITA (Darren Holland) shifted out abruptly tightening QUIET SMYTZER (G. Dorol) onto BELLOTTO PRINCESS (L. Meech), which was inclined to shift in. As a result the hindquarters of CHEVITA were turned in, resulting in that filly continuing to lay on QUIET SMYTZER, which was obliged to lose its position.

BELLOTTO PRINCESS (L. Meech) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of RUSSIAN CARAVAN revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 – GARVAN BALCREST STAKES

Prior to this event all runners were inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start.

The start of this race was delayed owing to COBAMUSE (D. Azis) proving reluctant to load. Mr. D. Balfour, the trainer of the gelding, was advised that a repetition of its behaviour may lead to action being taken against it.

Racing to the 800 metres SOCCER (W. Kerford), which was inclined to race greenly, shifted in abruptly resulting in AMOROSO (S. Price) being taken in onto COBAMUSE (D. Azis), which was obliged to steady and lose its position.

Approaching the finish COBAMUSE (D. Azis), which was inclined to race greenly under pressure, shifted out and brushed RUSTIC HALO (D. Tootell), which became unbalanced.

Subsequent to this event C. Lever was examined by the Club’s Medical Officer and ruled unfit to fulfil his engagement in Race 4.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of COBAMUSE revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4 – JAYCO CARAVANS HANDICAP

AWAY WITH FAIRIES was withdrawn by Stewards at 2.29 pm acting on veterinary advice that the mare was sore in its mouth. Stewards ordered that all bets on AWAY WITH FAIRIES be refunded. Bets on other runners made prior to the withdrawal to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:

20 cents in the dollar for the win, and
16 cents in the dollar for the place.
SP bets were subject to the deductions.

Approaching the line TOUCHARAJA (J. Maund) shifted out under riding and inconvenienced NASSI DOLL (B. Claridge).

RACE 5 – POPE PACKAGING HANDICAP

OXFORD REGENT (P. Gatt) was slow to jump.

OUR KING COUNTY (Darren Holland) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in abruptly colliding heavily with OXFORD REGENT (P. Gatt), which was hampered.

CLASSY LOOKER (B. Claridge) got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously when making the turn out of the back straight.

Racing to the 900 metres ROMEO’S PRINCESS (J. Bowditch), whilst being steadied, got its head up and was inclined to shift out onto LATTE (M. Hoppo), which was obliged to race tight against MISTER DISCREET (NZ) (W. Kerford) for some distance.

M. Hoppo, the rider of LATTE, reported that after being squeezed near the 900 metres his mount was under pressure to hold its position whilst racing between other runners. He added that, for a short distance after entering the straight, LATTE did not respond as generously as he had expected, to his riding, however, over the concluding stages she had become more generous.

SKIING lost its near fore plate and shifted its off fore plate during the race.

Subsequent to the race veterinary inspections of LATTE and IKAROS failed to reveal any visible abnormalities.

Subsequent to the race OUR KING COUNTY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to be slightly lame in the near foreleg.

RACE 6 – O P CONSULTANTS CLASSIC MILE

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres, whilst being steadied, SECRET HAZE (P. Gatt) got its head up for a short distance.

Racing to the 1000 metres SECRET HAZE (P. Gatt), which was inclined to race fiercely, got its head up and shifted out contacting MR. SELBY (T. Creek).

Near the 300 metres MORE ACTION (D. O’Heare) shifted in and inconvenienced OXFORD DOLLAR (B. Claridge) taking that gelding in onto MR. SELBY (T. Creek).

Approaching the finish UMALINE (W. Kerford) shifted in and tightened OXFORD DOLLAR (B. Claridge) onto MR. SELBY (T. Creek), resulting in MR. SELBY being obliged to steady off the heels of MORE ACTION (D. O’Heare), which was inclined to lay out under pressure.

Subsequent to the race veterinary inspections of MOET NOW and MR. SELBY revealed no visible abnormalities.

A veterinary examination of EXALTED LAD subsequent to the race revealed the gelding to be distressed in its action and had an abnormal heartbeat. Mr. J.D. Smith, the Trainer of EXALTED LAD, was advised that an ECG would be required to be forwarded to the TRSA Veterinary Surgeon prior to the gelding accepting for any future event.

RACE 7 – MALAYSIA AIRLINES STAKES

KURT (J. Bowditch) and DELTRICE (S. Price) jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1000 metres FLURRY’S GEM (J. Holder) shifted in onto MINT OF GOLD (G. Dorol), which was inclined to lay in, tightening that gelding in onto AGALIA (W. Kerford), which in turn was taken in, tightening DELTRICE (S. Price) onto KURT (J. Bowditch) resulting in DELTRICE and KURT being inconvenienced. At the same time DELTRICE and KURT were obliged to be restrained off the heels of COSMIC STRIKE (T. Creek), which had commenced to take the pace off. J. Holder was advised of his obligations when shifting ground. T. Creek, the rider of COSMIC STRIKE, was advised that, in similar circumstances in future, he would be required to exercise greater caution.

P. Gatt, the rider of STAR JOE (NZ), was reprimanded for not having ridden his mount to the finish of the race.

A veterinary examination of DELTRICE subsequent to the race revealed no visible abnormalities.

A veterinary examination of MINT OF GOLD subsequent to the race revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the near hind hock during the race.

RACE 8 – CHENEY DUTTON VOLVO HANDICAP

ROSE OF CAITLIN (J. Bowditch) and ROSE OF SIENA (T. Creek) were slow into stride.

In the early stages ROAD CLOSED (G. Dorol) was inclined to race greenly.

Near the 1000 metres HAMSTER JAZZ (J. Potter), which was inclined to lay in and away from KOODA SHINE (B. Claridge), shifted in abruptly resulting in ROAD CLOSED (G. Dorol) clipping the mare’s heels and G. Dorol becoming unbalanced for several strides.

ROSE OF SIENA (T. Creek) was eased out of the event inside the 300 metres. T. Creek reported to Stewards that, in the vicinity of the 400 metres his mount had attempted to buck and shortly after he became concerned with its action and thus eased it out of the race. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection revealed no visible abnormalities.
