Wyong (NSW) - Tuesday 19 February 2002
WEATHER: OVERCAST
TRACK: SLOW at 1.54pm DEAD

RACE 1 - TOOHEYS LIMITED - DAMON O'DONAHUE MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000M

Humidity, which was fractious in the mounting enclosure dislodging its rider, was examined behind the gates by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.

Humidity, which jumped awkwardly losing considerable ground, raced greenly throughout.

Just Play raced greenly in the straight.

Miami laid in under pressure over the final 250 metres.

A post race veterinary examination of Humidity revealed the filly to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer K Craft, who informed stewards that Humidity would now be spelled, was advised that before Humidity is permitted to start again it must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards.

RACE 2 - TOOHEYS LIMITED - JAMIE SMITH MAIDEN HANDICAP (DIV 1) 1200M

Likely Treasure was briefly held up in the early part of the straight.

When questioned regarding her riding of McSwain, B Cooper stated that as the mare had led and compounded two starts ago, her instructions were to ride McSwain back in the field from its wide barrier. A stable representative of trainer G Rogerson was reminded of the obligation to notify stewards of any change in riding tactics.

A veterinary inspection of the poorly performed Sharmeela showed no obvious abnormalities. Stable representative N Auld advised that Sharmeela would now be spelled.

After the running of this race the track was upgraded to Dead at 1.54pm.

RACE 3 - HAHN PREMIUM LIGHT MAIDEN HANDICAP (DIV 2) 1200M

Acting on veterinary advice that Burn, which reared in the barriers and struck its head, was unfit to start, stewards ordered its withdrawal at 2.21pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Burn be refunded in full and that all bets made with bookmakers be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of successful tickets: traditional win and each way bets: 23 cents win, 18 cents place. Trainer G Frazer was advised that before Burn is permitted to race again it must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards.

Apple Pie, which was slow to begin, was bumped shortly after the start when Mareb shifted in.

Near 150M Bureau De Charge was steadied away from the heels of Issues (T Jones) which was laying in under pressure. T Jones was advised to exercise more care.

A post race veterinary examination of Bureau De Charge revealed the gelding suffered a bleeding attack.

A post race veterinary examination of Shona Princess found the filly to be acutely lame in the near hind leg. Trainer B Puckeridge was advised that before Shona Princess is permitted to race again it must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards and a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced.

RACE 4 - HAHN PREMIUM CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1600M

This 'ill Do was crowded at the start between Act Natural, which shifted out, and Cups Quest.

A post race veterinary examination of Observing revealed the gelding suffered a bleeding attack.

RACE 5 - TOOHEYS EXTRA DRY PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 AND MAIDEN PLATE 1600M

Keen Bean jumped awkwardly.

Total Rush and Grey City overraced in the early stages.

When questioned as to why Occidental raced further back in the field than expected, R M Quinn stated that his instructions were to lead or to be running just behind the leaders, however after being fractious in the barriers Occidental jumped awkwardly and as such settled at the tail of the field. He said the colt travelled fairly throughout the race and when placed under pressure near the 600M responded only moderately. He added that in the straight Occidental gradually worked to the line satisfactorily.

RACE 6 - TOOHEYS OLD CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1000M

Approaching the first turn Shallrun became unbalanced and shifted in bumping Nimble Ayr in on to Embarrass which lost ground.

When questioned D Beasley stated that from the outset Arathea was not comfortable and did not show its usual speed in the early stages of the race. He said from the 500M Arathea was the first horse beaten and in his opinion was very disappointing. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormality and a swab sample was taken. Stable representative K Lees was unable to offer any excuse for the poor performance of Arathea and undertook to advise the stewards if there is anything amiss with the mare in the days subsequent. Stewards informed Mr Lees that upon receipt of that advice they will then give consideration as to whether any further action should be taken against Arathea.

RACE 7 - TOOHEYS MAXIM MAIDEN HANDICAP 1350M

When questioned regarding the improved performance of Twiggy, Mr N Auld, stable representative for trainer G Waterhouse, stated that at Kembla Grange on 2 February 2002 Twiggy was unsuited by the fast pace on a slow track in the 1000 metres race. He said today with the extra distance of the 1,350 metre race Twiggy was able to settle midfield and on the top of the ground was more comfortable.

When questioned as to his riding of Breadwinner, C Munce stated that from the wide barrier his instructions were to have the gelding in a rearward position in an attempt to get a clear run through the field in the straight. He said Breadwinner began well and despite his efforts would not come back to him and as he had been instructed not to go forward he was caught wide as a result. He said on straightening he commenced to ride Breadwinner along, however when The Drydocker and Horse King commenced to shifted out under pressure he was concerned that Breadwinner would be forced wider out on to the greyhound track. He said he was of the opinion that had this happened he would have been penalised for allowing his mount to shifted out on to the dogtrack. Stable representative for Ms G Waterhouse confirmed the instructions given to C Munce and stated that the gelding in its trials had raced in a rearward position and had not been a good trackworker. He said that on return to scale he was of the opinion that having raced wide throughout Breadwinner had compounded in the straight, however he felt that C Munce could have placed the gelding more pressure in the early part of the straight. In all the circumstances the stewards advised C Munce that he is to ensure he rides his mounts out fully in the straight so as to leave no doubt in the stewards' minds.

A post race veterinary examination of Strawin, which performed disappointingly, did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

When questioned B Cooper stated that her instructions were to ride Dervish back in the field, as had been notified to the stewards by trainer G Rogerson's stable representative. She stated that she had been forcefully instructed not to allow her mounts to travel extremely wide on straightening and as such instead of shifting to the outside of Breadwinner near the 300M she elected to follow The Drydocker through the field. Approaching the 200M when attempting a run to the outside of The Drydocker she had to steady when that run closed, she then shifted back to the inside of The Drydocker to obtain clear running near the 150M.

RACE 8 - TOOHEYS NEW CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1100M

Gunyah Guy was slow to begin.

Zofflene jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

Passing the 600M Gunyah Guy and Zofflene raced tight to the inside of Human Touch, which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of Washington Girl. A short distance later Gunyah Guy was steadied as a result of this crowding. Zofflene continued to be crowded for some distance and near the 400M had to be checked away from the heels of Human Touch and Proud Persian, both of which shifted ground. Zofflene was then inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the straight and as a result had to be steadied over the concluding stages when awkwardly placed on the heels of Prince Planet.

RACE 9 - TOOHEYS LIMITED CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1000M

Vizani and Poetic Papal were slow into stride.

Grand Franco shifted out on jumping and hampered Vizani.

On straightening Vizani had to be checked when awkwardly placed on the heels of the tiring Poetic Papal.

When questioned regarding the poor performance of Pilgrim, G Buckley stated that he was disappointed in the filly's run in that it never travelled at all throughout the running. A post race veterinary examination found Pilgrim to be displaying mild respiratory distress. Trainer G Frazer advised the stewards that he would have a full blood count and veterinary examination of the filly and report the findings to the stewards in the days subsequent.

When asked about the disappointing performance of Poetic Papal, D Beasley stated that the gelding had at no stage travelled and due to being consistently pressured by Ehorse, which was racing to his outside, he was unable to travel and was constantly ridden in the early and middle stages to maintain its position. He added that from about the 400M Poetic Papal commenced to weakened and tired badly in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of Poetic Papal did not reveal any obvious abnormality. Trainer Mr J Pride undertook to report to the stewards on the condition of Poetic Papal in the days subsequent.
